Welcome to the new site...well, this is more of a makeshift site until I finish the record...then we will have some more time to think about interior design and decoration and things might get a little fancier around here..

But for now this is somewhere to post bits and pieces as we go along...Ok, the new site is nearly ready- check back over the coming week...

PAUL DEMPSEY SECRET SHOW

For those of you who happen to be in Melbourne, on Tuesday 21st July, Paul and his brand new touring band will take the stage together for the very first time to play a warm up show before the Splendour in the Grass Festival. This show will not be advertised beyond Paul's website(s) and tickets will only be available at the door on the night. Surely an event not to be missed, the gig will take place at The Newtown Workers Club (formerly the Rob Roy), Corner Gertrude and Brunswick Streets, Fitzroy.

Well, good afternoon... Back home after a few weeks playing shows around the country...thank you again to everyone who came along and made every show such an enjoyable experience, it's been extremely enjoyable and gratifying after the last 18 months of solitary work to go out and play these new songs and be met with such enthusiasm and interest... 'Ramona Was A Waitress', is a complete contrast to the stripped back acoustic sparseness of 'Out the Airlock'.  A pounding meditation on artificial intelligence, love, death and robots, 'Ramona' sees Paul manning all instruments led by a driving mechanical pulse into a beautiful piano-driven chorus that carries you away somewhere else entirely.

PAUL ADDS FREE SYDNEY SHOW

If you live in Sydney's East, you'll know that in addition to the monolithic Westfield at Bondi Junction and the picturesque beaches, one of the main attractions of the area is the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi which does an excellent line in live music every Wednesday night.  Paul will be playing a solo acoustic show there on Wednesday the 17th of June to accommodate all those who missed out on tickets to the Annandale show, and of course, anyone else who fancies it. That's right folks, the album is called Everything is True and if you don't believe me, it will be on your record store shelves on August 14...
I hit the road next week for shows around the country and I'm really looking forward to playing all of these songs live, a lot of them for the first time.... as well as a few other strange things that have come along in the last week or so...

Having initially planned on doing a mere two solo shows in Sydney and Melbourne, it now seems fairly obvious that was perhaps a little bit light-on after all the time Paul has spent away - certainly judging from all of the messages we received from folks in the other capitals suggesting this to be the case. Consider the point taken, and rectified in the form of more June solo shows in Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane.  The Melbourne show sold out in two days, Brisbane's first Troubadour and Sydney's show have also sold out, so be sure to get in early for these shows, as the venues are intimate. Paul is currently on a flight home, so forgive the lack of personal tone, but exciting news in that Mr Demspey will be playing two solo shows in June. Tickets will be available for our special friends from 9.00am this Friday 1st of May, and go on sale to the general public from 9.00am Monday 4th May.  These venues are a touch "cozy", so book now to avoid disappointment.

For those of you outside of Sydney and Melbourne please rest assured that there will be an extensive Australian national tour later in the year taking in all points of the compass, as well as plans afoot for further shows in regional areas over summer.

Greetings from New York... It's a pleasure as always to be in this magnificent city....

Well, hello there... I've got a few days out of the studio at the moment.... I'm playing a show at the Hotel Cafe on Friday night at 9pm if you happen to be in the LA area...

In other news, the first track to be released from the album is a song called 'Out the Airlock', which you'll be able to download or request on your favourite radio station in a matter of weeks... who'd have thought?

TUESDAY

Seven songs down, a few more to go... after the first couple it gets much easier to put the stamp on a song and move through to the next one... and even with the long hours in the studio I am having a wonderful time and learning many important life lessons... like if a car is driving directly head-on towards you at an unusually high speed - the time you spend quibbling about whose lane it's supposed to be could be better spent getting out of the way... true!... there are so many things this town is ready to teach if you are ready to learn...

In the Airlock...

You spend over a year working on something and thinking about it all the time and changing it and refining it and then it all comes down to that one moment in the mixing where you have to declare it absolutely, finally, definitively done... and there's no such thing.. (so you go out on tour and try to play some definitive version every night... and there's no such thing... but all the fun is in the pursuit)... mixing a record is just the bit where you are forced to commit to something... unless of course you happen to be Axl Rose.

But it's good... making a decision about anything is usually accompanied by a great sense of relief... right, I'll quit boring you now and go try bungee-jumping or something....

US Shows...

I'm going to play a couple of shows while I'm here in the states mixing the record.. one in L.A. at the Hotel Cafe on April 10th and one in New York at the Living Room on the 16th, you can find some more details on the myface... or spacebook... meanwhile progress is being made on the record and this very website will be awash with sound and vision in the weeks to come... to prove it... feels like I've being saying this for a while... almost there.

Day one....again

On the other side of the hill... again... a new studio, a new dog... first cab off the rank (rank or rink? oh sweet jesus, I'll be up all night) is a song called 'Take us to your leader' - the word 'falsetto' doesn't seem fair...

Stage two...

From a reality far from burger joints to a burger joint far from reality... This time next week I'll be in LA to begin mixing the album and you know what that means....

The Waiting Game

Playing the waiting game for a couple of weeks until the mixing stage of the record begins... It's my least favourite game... I'm crap at it... Keep reading.. Keep writing.. Talk to the cat.. Do stuff that needs doing and try not to do stuff that doesn't need doing... Don't let the almost-finished record in the other room drive you bat-shit-crazy... Get really good at the waiting game.

Packed up the gear and drove back home... sad to leave the peaceful surrounds of Macmasters beach and our makeshift studio but also excited to get home and continue recording bits and pieces and keep playing around with the whole thing before I head off to mix it... still feeling a strange lag.. like I'm in both places.. or neither place... bilocation or psychedelic truck-stop food?

Wayne and I realized last night that we began recording this album on the same day that CBS bought Fender in 1965... After much discussion, debate, stand-up philosophy, bad calculations, laughter and tears we decided that we should buy the Fender Musical Instrument Corporation for ourselves.. We may not have quite the required funds but we have some very audacious hopes...

Monday 19th January 2009 - Progress

We're into the best part of any recording session, where all the basic, fundamental parts are there and you can start to experiment and throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks.... What else?... We've officially adopted the snake.. And... I had a truly wonderful episode of food poisoning on the weekend... And.. While I was laid up I read 'The Henson Case' by David Marr which I highly recommend (although it made me feel sick on top of feeling sick).. and... Feeling much better today thank you... Back to it...

I think this fellow lives in the roof... We don't really see him all day and then he turns up in the evening.. I don't mind him listening in so long as he stays outdoors...

What can I tell you?...The studio-tourette's has set in.. I don't know whether it's cabin fever or perhaps some unconscious way of keeping the mental energy up but by the end of the first week of any recording session everybody (or in this case myself and Wayne) starts to speak in tongues, do bad impressions and occasionally re-enact entire scenes from the stage and screen... Heeeeeerrrrre¹s Johnny!....What else?.. One cockatoo is a beautiful thing, it's tempting to reach out and caress their soft white feathers... One hundred cockatoo's sound like Satan's flying hordes tearing a hole in the sky and gathering in number until they can swoop down and pick your bones clean...

Annnnd.... Drums and drums and bass and bass....

...

Day One

And we're off!... So this is home for the next few weeks while we record this album, 'we' being myself and engineer Wayne Connolly, he of the vintage cars and guitars, producer to the stars, patron saint of the huntsman spider... We are wedged somewhere between a forest and an ocean, it's a nice place to be, cockatoo alarm clocks and frog lullabies... We've managed to turn a small guest-house into a studio.. The coffee does not make itself and the burger joint is nowhere to be seen. The bedroom is the control room...which is also the living room... Etc..
